YouView app redesign

Lead Interaction Designer

Overview

YouView is a TV platform that blends free-to-air digital TV with On-demand services.

While working at YouView as the Lead Interaction Designer, I undertook a self-initiated project to redesign the mobile app. The aim was to inspire the design, product, and development teams and lay the groundwork for the app's future.

While the redesign did look to the future, I ensured that all design elements were achievable with the resources at hand.

This project also included creating the foundation for a new Design System.

Home screen

The app started with having one primary purpose – setting recordings on the YouView box. As the app expanded in functionality and features, a new home screen was required to surface content from different areas of the app.

The new home screen mirrors the behaviour of the YouView set-top box, helping to give users a sense of continuity between devices.

TV Guide

The TV Guide is considered sacred by our users, something we shouldn’t mess with without good reason. This design combines a new approach with the traditional TV Guide.

Users start with a visual view of all the content that they can currently watch; when navigating into the future, it transitions into a more traditional TV Guide. The aim is to simplify finding this to watch now while keeping a sense of familiarity when planning what to watch later.

MyTV

The update to MyTV brings a cleaner visual design and structure while also breaking down content into clearer groupings, such as ‘This week’ / ‘Last week’, to help users find content more quickly.

Discover

The main focus of redesigning the Discover section was to bring it inline with the vision for the set-top box. Therefore, the aim is to provide users with a way to find something to watch without overwhelming them with choices.

The redesign simplifies the structure and improves the readability of the old design.
